Manipuri Raas Leela is a classical dance tradition that grew out of the temple culture of Manipur, a state in North East India. In the local Meitei language it is known as Jagoi Raas, and the movement carries the same spirit — slow, rounded and meditative, flowing like water rather than striking like thunder.

It is one of the eight classical dance forms recognised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi of India, alongside Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Kathakali, Mohiniyattam and Sattriya. What sets Manipuri Raas Leela apart is its devotional mood: the dancer performs not to display skill alone, but as an offering, with calm eyes and an inward, composed expression.

The choreography keeps returning to the circle — the Raas is the circular dance of Krishna and the gopis — and groups weave between circles, diagonals and rows, forming living patterns on the stage. Female dancers wear the kumil — a stiff, cylindrical skirt known locally as the potloi — which flares and sways with every turn. Over it sit a white translucent overskirt (poswan), a velvet blouse, and a fine veil (oshna) draped over a conical cap called the koktombi. The skirt is traditionally deep red, richly embroidered and finished with silver-gold borders.

Krishna is dressed in a bright yellow dhoti, an embroidered vest and a tall crown decorated with peacock feathers, completed with gold ornaments. The effect of a full troupe — rows of white-veiled gopis circling a peacock-crowned Krishna — is instantly recognisable and photographs remarkably well.
