Dances of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal’s dance heritage echoes through its mountain valleys – from Kullu’s dussehra grounds to Chamba’s ancient temples, Lahaul’s Buddhist gompas and Spiti’s high deserts. Seasonal festivals, harvest celebrations, and local deities inspire circle dances, mask performances, and ritual storytelling. Vibrant woollen costumes, embroidered caps, silver jewellery, and instruments like nagara, dhol, karnal, narsingha, and flute create the quintessential Pahari rhythm. Each community – be it Gaddi, Kinnauri, Pangwali or Spitian – preserves centuries-old movements that honour nature, gods and ancestors.
