Karma Dance (also called Karam Nritya) is one of the most spiritually powerful and rhythmically captivating tribal folk dances of India. Performed around the sacred branch of the Karam (Sal) tree, this dance is the cultural heartbeat of the Gond, Oraon, Baiga, Munda, Bhuiya and Kol tribes of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and parts of West Bengal.
Performed during the Karma Puja festival on Bhadra Shukla Ekadashi (August–September), Karma Dance is a tribute to Karam Devta — the deity of fate, fertility, youth, and a bountiful harvest. Men and women, hand in hand, encircle the planted Karam branch and dance through the night to the deep, hypnotic beats of the mandar drum.
The legend of Karma Dance flows from an ancient tribal folktale of two brothers — Karma and Dharma — whose devotion to the Karam tree restored prosperity to their village. Passed down for centuries through oral tradition, the dance has remained nearly unchanged in its purest tribal form. The word Karma means "fate" or "deed," and the dance is believed to invoke the blessings of good karma for the entire community.
The ritual begins with unmarried girls fetching a young Karam branch from the forest, which is then ceremoniously planted at the centre of the village courtyard. Offerings of flowers, sprouted grains (jawa) and lamps are made. Then, as drums begin to roll, dancers form concentric circles around the branch — symbolising the cycle of life, seasons and karma itself.
Karma Puja is the harvest-cum-fertility festival of tribal India. Karma Dance is its living, breathing soul. From dusk to dawn, the rhythmic clap-step-spin of dozens of dancers around the Karam tree creates a trance-like atmosphere — a powerful prayer for prosperity, fertility and the welfare of the community.
Karma Dance is recognised as the state dance representative of Chhattisgarh's and Jharkhand's tribal heritage. It has been performed at the Republic Day Parade, the Bastar Lok Mahotsav, Jharkhand's Sarhul festival celebrations and numerous international cultural showcases — earning admiration as one of the most authentic surviving tribal dances of India.
What makes Karma Dance unforgettable is its raw, earthy energy. Dancers move in interlocked rows, hands clasped, feet stamping in perfect synchrony, voices rising in melodic call-and-response. The mandar drum's deep boom, the jingle of ghungroos and the swaying of peacock-feather hair ornaments together create a primal, soul-stirring experience that no stage performance can replicate without authentic tribal artists.
Today, professional Karma Dance troupes bring this sacred tribal art to corporate Diwali events, theme weddings, ethnic festivals, school programs and international showcases. At Book My Dance, we bring genuine Gond and Oraon tribal artists directly from Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand to Delhi NCR and pan-India — preserving every ritual element, instrument, costume and choreography while adapting the show length to suit your event.
Whether you want a 15-minute high-impact opener or a full one-hour immersive tribal cultural experience, our Karma Dance group delivers an authentic performance your guests will never forget.
Karma Dance is the tribal folk dance of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and parts of West Bengal — the great tribal belt of central and eastern India. It is the signature dance of the Gond, Oraon, Baiga, Munda, Bhuiya and Kol communities. In Chhattisgarh it is most popular in Bastar, Surguja, Jashpur and Raigarh, while in Jharkhand it is widely performed in Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla and Simdega.
The dance peaks during Karma Puja on Bhadra Shukla Ekadashi (August–September), when entire tribal villages stay awake through the night singing and dancing around the sacred Karam branch.
