Book professional Paika martial folk dance artists from Odisha and Jharkhand for festivals, corporate events, government programs, weddings & tourism showcases — PAN India, with live mardala-dhol-mahuri musicians, authentic swords, shields and traditional warrior costumes.
Paika Dance is one of India's most spectacular martial folk dance forms, originating from the historic state of Odisha. Rooted in the traditions of the legendary Paika warrior community, this high-energy performance showcases extraordinary sword fighting, shield combat, spear techniques, martial arts, and acrobatic movements. Accompanied by the powerful beats of the mardala, dhol, mahuri, and traditional percussion instruments, Paika Dance symbolizes bravery, discipline, patriotism, and the glorious legacy of the 1817 Paika Rebellion (Paika Bidroha) against British rule.
An in-depth journey into the origins, weapons, costumes, music and modern revival of Odisha's iconic warrior folk dance.
Paika — pronounced Pai-ka — is far more than a folk dance. It is the living memory of a warrior community that once defended the kingdoms of coastal Odisha and rose in armed revolt against the British East India Company in 1817, eleven full years before the Sepoy Mutiny. Today, when a Paika troupe leaps onto the stage with swords flashing and dhol thundering, you are witnessing a tradition that has travelled almost unchanged from the battlefields of medieval Kalinga to the modern Indian stage.
The word Paika comes from the Sanskrit Padatika, meaning "foot soldier". The Paikas were the traditional warrior peasants of Odisha — men who tilled their fields during peacetime and picked up swords, shields and spears the moment their king called. Each Paika was attached to a village akhada — a martial training ground — where boys learned weaponry, gymnastics, breath control and dance-like combat drills from a guru. Those drills, refined over generations, slowly evolved into what we today call Paika Dance or Paika Akhada.
No story of Paika is complete without remembering the Paika Bidroha of 1817. Led by the legendary Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar, the Paikas of Khurda rose in armed rebellion against British rule — making it one of the very first organised freedom struggles in India. Many historians now consider this the true "First War of Independence". Every Paika performance today carries echoes of that rebellion: the warrior cries, the synchronized sword strikes, and the proud lion-like postures all honour those ancestors.Folk Dance of Bihar
A Paika performance is a feast of choreographed weaponry. Artists wield the khanda (straight sword), dhala (shield), banati (rotating fire-staff), lathi (bamboo stick) and spear in synchronized duels and group formations. Between weapon sequences, the dancers break into stunning acrobatics — somersaults, flying kicks, human pyramids and floor spins — all timed to the rhythm of the dhol. For indoor venues, our artists use blunt practice weapons and choreographed routines that look fierce but remain completely safe.
Paika artists dress as classical Odia warriors: short white or saffron dhoti tied tightly at the waist, a coloured kamarbandha, brass arm-bands, ankle bells and a turban often topped with peacock feathers. Faces are streaked with sandalwood and vermillion to evoke the look of a warrior preparing for battle. On a well-lit stage, the effect is cinematic — every spin of a sword catches the light, every shield strike resounds through the venue.
The pulse of Paika is set by the mardala — Odisha's iconic two-headed drum — backed by the dhol, mahuri (a folk shehnai-like reed instrument), telingi baja and crashing jhanj cymbals. The tempo builds gradually from a slow ceremonial introduction into a thunderous climax that has audiences on their feet. Our musicians are professional folk instrumentalists who have accompanied Paika troupes at Bali Yatra, Konark Festival and major government events for decades.
A closely related tribal form called Paika Nritya survives in Jharkhand among the Munda, Kurmi and Bhumij communities. Here the dance leans more towards group formations and rhythmic footwork than weaponry, but the core spirit — warrior discipline expressed as dance — is identical. Book My Dance offers both the Odia martial Paika and the Jharkhand tribal Paika depending on what suits your event.
In recent years, Paika has gained enormous national attention. The Government of India commemorated 200 years of the Paika Rebellion in 2017 with stamps, conferences and major cultural showcases. Paika troupes have performed at Republic Day, Khelo India, Odisha Parba, Bali Yatra, Konark Festival and Indian cultural events in the UK, USA, Singapore and Mauritius. For tourism boards and corporate brands looking for an unforgettable Indian opening act, Paika is unmatched in visual impact.
